Bearance (2019/2020) is the second work in an evolving performance collaboration between Matty Davis and Ben Gould that continues the trajectory set forth by Carriage, a work marked by relentless physical unions based on control, empathy, and need. Bearance, harnessing tools learned through Carriage, aims to make felt relationships that forge and break apart simultaneously—by force, by desire, by time. Through a mutually driven effort to find new depths of what can be shared and endured, bodies compress, shear, and compress again as Davis and Gould negotiate private and interpersonal dynamics that challenge one another to hold on and sustain, as much as they do to let go.
