Generated in the context of absence, Severance (2021) marks the close of a particular shared
trajectory, yet one that has no definite end. Instead, Severance endures as a network of
ongoing change and distillment. Through the sublimation of tools discovered in Carriage
and Bearance, Davis and Gould forge new dimensions of shared experience. Trust begets
separation and sensation bestows empathy. In the spirit of a gem’s formation, Severance is
forever cut and faceted by new choreographic structures tuned to the evolving nature of need
and desire, refracting the entirety of a body of work both past and present.
